Ryan Mallet or Tyler Wilson? The fresh new debate on the Arkansas QB!

After Tyler Wilson's amazing play in the 3rd quarter of Arkansas's game against Auburn, there has been a lot of talk about a QB controversy or debate in Arkansas. I watched the game, and I am amazed at how well Tyler Wilson did in the time he was give. He led Arkansas to the point of almost winning the game, then everything fell apart, and fell apart FAST!

Here's my problem with Tyler Wilson as QB this year. Yes, it was awesome to see him run the game how he did and how to lead Arkansas. But 1 game isn't a good determining factor of how someone is or will be. I do believe down the line that Tyler Wilson will be an amazing QB. But lets look at his numbers since Tyler Wilson has been at Arkansas.

In 3 years worth of games, a total of 8 games played in, Tyler Wilson has thrown the ball 95 times and completed 59 passes for 62%. He has thrown for 615 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. Granted, he hasn't played much, but also when he has played Arkansas has been playing against mainly second team defenses. And he has a 1:1 touchdown, interception ratio. He averages just 6.5 yards per attempted pass, which isn't much. This year his numbers have improved quite a bit, but they still follow a similar trend.

Now let's look at Ryan Mallet. He has started 20 games for Arkansas. In those 20 games, he has thrown for a total of 5868 yard! That's an average of 293 yards a game. He has attempted 637 passes and completed 385 for a completion percentage of 60%. He has 47 touchdown tosses compared to just 14 interceptions. That is almost a 3:1 touchdown to interception ratio. And he averages 9.2 yards per pass attempt, that is almost 3 yards more than Tyler Wilson.

When something goes wrong in Arkansas, we always look for a quick fix. I do think down the road that Tyler Wilson will be able to sufficiently be able to lead Arkansas. I just don't think it is right now. Mallet has proved to be better than any QB we have ever had at Arkansas, so why are we so quick to want to throw him out? Mallet will be gone after this year, and Arkansas will be in good hands.

Saturday to me didn't cause a debate about who the QB should be, but it made me happy for the future of Arkansas. I was always questioning Tyler Wilson's ability to lead Arkansas, but Saturday answered that question. The future of Arkansas Football looks to be promising. But for now, Ryan Mallet is the best choice at QB for Arkansas.
